About Us

Our History

At Smokehouse Fly Fishing we’ve been passionate about fly fishing and hosting trips to some of the world’s most beautiful places for over 20 years. Our founder, Stewart Gordon, started the business out of his love for the sport and desire to share it with others. Since then, we’ve been dedicated to providing the highest quality fly fishing experiences to those who are new to the sport as well as experienced anglers. Stewart began his fly fishing life at the age of 8 and has been in the industry as a store owner, guide, instructor and trip host since 2000.

How did We Get Our Name?

“Smokehouse Fly Fishing” got its name from a Wyoming backcountry adventure Stewart hosted for close to 10 years. It was one of his absolute favorite and memorable trips.

From the campsite, overlooking a huge meadow, the cutthroat filled Buffalo Fork would snake its way just below the base of Smokehouse Mountain. Each evening after a delicious dinner we would gather with drinks in hand to watch the sunset brighten the face of Smokehouse. That never got old and it was definitely a highlight to the end of each day.

Stewart Gordon

Back in May of 1979 I was on the verge of turning 9 years old. My Dad, a dedicated outdoorsman, taught me all he knew about hunting and fishing from the time I could hold a fishing rod or rifle. But, on this particular occasion he put a fly rod in my hand and it changed my whole perspective about all things related to fishing. Eventually, it would alter my life in a way I could never have imagined.

Fast forward to the year 1999. I had signed on with the Orvis Company as an authorized dealer in Winston Salem, NC. The dream of making a living doing what I loved the most was about to happen and I couldn’t wrap my brain around what would unfold over the next 20 years. My little fly shop survived that long and we slowly built up our guide business and also started a destination travel service. It allowed me to fly fish in some of the world’s most beautiful places. The Bahamas, Montana, the Wyoming backcountry, Northern Canada, Belize and Mexico not to mention our local waters in North Carolina, Virginia and eastern Tennessee.

I’ve learned so much from many of the anglers that joined me all those years and I hope I passed on valuable experience back to them. I started Smokehouse Fly Fishing because I enjoy introducing new and seasoned anglers to places I’ve fished and explore other unique and special locations. To me, the options are endless and I’m passionate about chasing fish in all the beautiful places they live!

Adventure is calling! I hope you’ll come join us!
